Triple Play

Well the Mets long season continued yesterday in a game that saw two plays that one rarely sees. The first play was with the Mets first batter of the day: Angel Pagan. Pagan, hit an inside the park home run. He would later add a second home run. His bid to become the first Met to hit three home runs in Citi Field (a feat never accomplished at Shea) fell short, however.

The second play was even rarer and occurred with the Mets last batter of the game. Jeff Francoeur was hitting with men on first and second. With the runners going on the pitch, Francoeur and a line drive to the second baseman who caught the ball, stepped on 2nd, and tagged the runner who was coming from first. For only the second time in MLB history, a game ended on an unassisted triple play.

This reminds me of the Mets most famous triple play to end a game that never happened! In June of 1967, the Pirates loaded the bases loaded with no outs. Bill Mazeroski steps up and hits a ground ball to Ed Charles. Charles makes the put out at third before firing the ball to the second baseman who makes the put out at second. He then throws to Ed Kranepool to complete the triple play! Or at least that was how it happened in the movie the Odd Couple. To find out more go here!
